A duffle bag is ideal for hikers, backpackers, and other outdoor enthusiasts, as a duffle can hold more than a suitcase while remaining lightweight. Traditional duffle bags are lighter and more pliable than their wheeled counterparts, making them easier to strap onto a roof-rack or a pack animal.
Duffle bags are also ideal for business travelers – most bags come in TSA approved sizes (the Archibald Leather duffle at yukonbags.com is TSA compliant and can hold more than an equally sized suitcase).
Think of your duffle bag as a great multipurpose bag. Adventurers need a reliable bag – tough enough to survive the untamed wilderness, large enough to hold all the gear, and soft enough to fold up and stash somewhere out of the way. Business travelers need a sturdy, TSA-compliant bag that is both durable and stylish enough to fit in at any business-related event. Duffle bags can easily be stuffed into overhead bins and Leather duffle bags look smart. With their soft, pliant outer shells and roomy interiors, duffle bags have the flexibility you need to take on any type of trip. The Avalanche Leather Duffle Bag is the perfect example of a tough, dependable bag with a striking vintage look that is elegant enough to take everywhere.
Packing your duffle to optimize space does not have to be a challenge. With a bit of preparation and organization, packing your duffle bag can be a breeze. Here are 10 simple steps to pack a duffle bag:
1-Make a list. Include vitally important items like medications and chargers on this list. Be careful not to overpack – if your bag weighs more than 50 lbs., it will not make it through the TSA checkpoint. For hikers and camping enthusiasts – remember, you are going to be hauling that bag on your treks, be sure that it is light enough to carry.
2-Heaviest items go on the bottom, lighter items on top. Placing shoes and other heavy items at the bottom of the bag prevents lighter things from being crushed. This also helps to form a sturdy base.
3-Roll socks, gloves, and other small items, and stuff into your shoes. This helps your shoes to retain shape while optimizing space.
4-Roll pants, shirts, undergarments, and tops, into tight cylinders. Smooth your clothing as you roll to prevent wrinkling. Rolling your clothing keeps items in better (wrinkleless) condition and does a terrific job of optimizing space.
5-Provide an extra barrier between your items and your (potentially leaky) toiletries. Place toiletries into a plastic, zippered bag before putting them into your designated toiletry bag. Next, place this bag into a zippered compartment in your duffle.
6-Group smaller items like snacks, electronics, chargers, and batteries, into separate bags. Mesh or compartment bags work great, large zippered baggies will also work in a pinch.
7-Wrap shoes in plastic before packing. Shoes pick up a lot of dirt! Shoes and all your heavy items go on the bottom of the duffle bag, lighter things on top. The Archibald leather duffle bag has a convenient, zippered outer pocket that keeps shoes separate from clothing.
8-Layer your clothing on top of the shoes. You can separate clothing items by color or separate work clothing from play clothes. Place the items you will need first on top.
9-Arrange your smaller bags on top of the clothing. Now is the time to add the smaller items that you organized in Step 6. Place the things that you will need quick access to on top. Important documents like your driver’s license and passport should go somewhere safe and secure. If you will not need immediate access, stuffing them into your shoes before packing or at the bottom of the bag is ideal. If you are in an airport and need quick access, a zippered pocket is convenient and secure. You can add a small lock for extra protection.
10-Use small items to fill in gaps and spaces. Even a small duffle bag can hold a lot – optimize space by filling in gaps with socks and other small stuff. Additionally, you can slide magazines and books around the sides of the bag – this creates a hard, outer shell that provides extra protection to your belongings.
Check off items on your list as you pack. Folding and packing a smaller duffle inside your larger one is perfect for when you are hiking (or having a business lunch) and don’t need to be lugging the full-size bag. Every bag is 100% authentic full-grain, crazy horse leather – the most dependable, and beautiful, leather in the world. We hope you enjoy our selection of beautifully sturdy vintage leather bags.

]]>Leather cream provides essential moisture to keep the leather soft and flexible. It prevents cracking and peeling while providing water-resistant protection from the elements. Sunlight can fade leather, a good leather cream such as Yukon’s will have ingredients that protect the leather from UV light, keeping the color fresh. Leather cream can restore your item’s color and help repair scratches and scuffs. With crazy horse leather, the cream helps turn daily scuff marks into a beautiful, lustrous patina, so the look of the leather improves with wear and time. A good leather cream will penetrate the leather fibers, keeping your leather strong and supple.
Leather conditioner is used to moisturize the leather but does not provide a rich sheen like a cream does. Conditioners protect leather from the elements while keeping it soft and supple but cannot restore color like the creams do. Most leather conditioners contain oils and waxes that can darken the leather, so always do a spot test somewhere inconspicuous (like the bottom of the bag) before applying to the entire item.
Wax provides shine and water resistance. Wax cannot penetrate the fibers, so it does not provide the moisture that fine leather needs. Wax’s main purpose is to provide water resistance and shine. To keep your leather looking as good as new, you will still need to use a cream or conditioner to penetrate the fibers, provide nourishment, and replace vital oils that are lost over time.
Yukon’s leather cream was specifically developed to clean, nourish, and protect your fine leather items. Never use soap or detergent on leather, they can cause irreparable damage. Yukon’s conditioning cream is all you need to clean and protect your leather. Our exclusive combination of oils provides the nourishment your leather item needs to stay supple and durable, looking as good as the day you bought it. Our cream helps the leather to repair itself and provides the ultimate in water resistance and U.V. protection. Yukon’s leather conditioning cream restores the natural color of the leather and aids in developing a lustrous patina.
The Macaulay Crossbody Bag by Yukon is a multipurpose bag with an elegant design and comfortable, convertible, ergonomic straps. Clean, sleek lines showcase the striking natural grain of the crazy horse leather. Leather wax can be used to emphasize the beautiful patina, but a conditioner or cream is still necessary to nourish the fibers. An average conditioner provides the oils the leather needs to remain soft and supple but can’t restore color like a leather cream. Keep Yukon’s leather conditioning kit in the Macaulay’s roomy front pocket to quickly address a spill or scuff mark. Yukon’s leather conditioning cream provides the perfect balance of protection, nourishment, and color restoration. Our leather cream replaces the need for separate cleansers, conditioners, and wax or polish. The Macaulay is built to last; Yukon’s leather conditioning cream will ensure a long and beautiful lifespan.
The first step in caring for your leather is to purchase a great leather conditioning cream. Look at the ingredients to ensure it has everything you need to nourish and protect the leather without additional harmful ingredients. Yukon has taken away the guesswork by offering our new leather conditioning kit. Our kit consists of a tin of our exclusive conditioning cream and a soft sponge applicator inside a convenient leather pouch. Yukon’s kit is the perfect size to toss into your bag, backpack, or briefcase to have on hand in case of emergencies. Lightweight and portable, you can keep your kit with you to prevent damage from accidental spills, scratches, or exposure to the elements. An additional bonus is the leather pouch the kit arrives in –this little pouch has a jam-free YKK zipper and can be reused in a multitude of ways!
A good leather conditioning cream must be free from acids, impurities, and most natural fats. Some manufacturers include these harmful ingredients in their conditioners, as they give a quick, inexpensive shine to leather items. Unfortunately, the shine wears off and these ingredients go rancid, leaving behind a bad smell. They also leave the leather prone to cracking and rotting. Yukon’s leather cream has been developed to provide both short-term aid and long-term nourishment for your fine leather items. Our exclusive leather cream is 100% free of acids, impurities, and harmful natural fats. Our cream provides emergency aid as needed and utilizes the right kind of oils to nourish and protect the leather and prolong its lifespan.
When used once or twice a year to clean and condition, Yukon’s leather conditioning cream will enhance your bag’s appearance while extending its long life. Our leather bags are built to last - maintain your leather items with Yukon’s leather conditioning cream to ensure their lifetime of beauty and durability.
Two key ingredients to look for in a great conditioning cream are sweet almond oil and sweet cacao butter. These are the main ingredients in Yukon’s leather conditioning cream. Sweet almond oil is an organic ingredient that is eco-friendly. This oil contains a high level of linoleic acid, an omega fat that is great for both skin and leather. Fats that are too greasy or heavy may leave a short-term shine, but they dry out quickly, leaving the leather brittle. Sweet almond oil penetrates deeply into the leather, nourishing it and leaving it soft and supple. Sweet cacao butter has been used on the skin for centuries thanks to its excellent moisturizing capabilities. Sweet cacao butter is also a great moisturizer for leather. Unlike other natural fats, sweet cacao butter does not go rancid, which can leave behind a bad smell. Cacao butter absorbs deep into the leather without leaving a heavy or greasy residue. Cacao butter also provides excellent U.V. protection and water resistance.
Here is a quick list of the important benefits these two ingredients provide:
SWEET CACAO BUTTER:
Here at Yukon Bags, we wanted to create the ultimate leather conditioning cream. We’ve added paraffin to soften the leather while providing extra waterproofing and a beautiful sheen. Hydrocarbon waxes are included so no additional wax needs to be applied. Our exclusive mixture of waxes condition, moisturize, preserve, and polish the leather. They provide superior water and weather- proofing, creating an invisible barrier between your leather item and the harsh elements.
The short-term effects of our conditioning cream result in a clean, beautifully polished leather item that is protected from outside elements. The long-term effects include extending the life of your leather item while keeping the leather soft, supple, and strong. This cream penetrates the leather’s fibers to provide nourishment and replace the vital oils that leather loses over time. It forms an invisible barrier to provide the ultimate protection against liquids, harmful UV rays, and the elements.
Yukon’s leather conditioning cream helps the leather to repair itself and restores leather to its original color. Cleaning and conditioning your leather items with our cream not only extends the item’s lifespan, but also aids in transforming scuffs, scratches, and marks from accidental spills into a rich patina that highlights the fine quality of crazy horse leather.
The Morley Leather Tote Bag by Yukon is the ideal go-everywhere bag. This versatile tote has a detachable inner cloth lining – perfect for easy cleanup, this convenient liner can be quickly removed to allow extra storage space for a weekend getaway. Scratches, scuffs, and spills are no match for the authentic crazy horse leather the Morley is crafted of. Toss Yukon’s leather conditioning kit into this sturdy tote to aid the leather in repairing itself. The markings from your daily adventures will gracefully transform and become a part of the bag’s burnished patina.

Cleaning and conditioning your fine leather item once or twice a year will prolong its lifespan and keep the leather looking and feeling as good as new. Leather is an organic material that can lose moisture over time, just like your skin. Conditioning the leather will keep it soft, supple, and water-resistant.
Our skin loses vital oils over time, so we use moisturizer to keep it looking and feeling soft and supple. Leather also loses vital oils over time, leather creams and conditioners are designed to replace these oils and prevent the leather from cracking, peeling, or ripping.
Leather conditioning creams and waxes offer protection from dirt, dust, moisture, and the elements. Conditioning your crazy horse leather item prolongs the lifespan and helps the leather do what crazy horse leather does best: remain durable, flexible, and supple while transforming scratches, bumps, and dings into a beautiful patina, rich with multi-tonal hues.
The Archibald Leather Duffle Bag by Yukon can brave a lifetime of wear and tear. Over time, the leather develops a rich, lustrous patina that highlights its natural beauty. This rugged duffle bag is ideal for traveling – scuffs and scratches easily transform into subtle hue variations that add to the patina.
Accidental spills and sudden storms pose no problem – toss a leather conditioning kit by Yukon inside the Archibald Duffle for emergency treatments. The Archibald’s vintage design beautifully compliments the striking grain of the crazy horse leather.
A light maintenance schedule of cleaning and conditioning will enrich the classic look and feel that only top-quality leather provides. Most items only need to be cleaned and conditioned once or twice a year, items that are exposed to extreme wear and tear may need to be conditioned a bit more often, up to three or four times a year. Avoid over-conditioning your leather items, once or twice a year is all that’s needed with normal wear and tear. Over-conditioning will weaken the fibers and can result in the bag losing its shape.
Additional care should be taken to prevent accidents from causing permanent damage. A quick swipe to clean and condition the leather after accidental exposure to water (and other fluids), dirt, or accidental scratches and bumps will help the leather to repair itself. Just as healthy skin can heal itself, full-grain leather, being an organic material, can also bounce back. A good leather conditioning cream will penetrate the leather, replenishing moisture and nourishing the fibers.
Crazy horse leather has the distinctive ability to transform scratches, scuffs, and spills into beautiful multi-tonal hues. Addressing accidents immediately and treating your leather item to an annual conditioning treatment will help in restoring the color and developing a rich patina and luster.
The leather’s patina is a hallmark of high quality. Only full-grain leather can develop a patina. A well-developed patina creates a unique variety of subtle hues, creating a sheen that looks richer and better with time, wear, and tear. Each patina is as unique as the individual.
The patina tells the story of the times and adventures your bag has spent with you. Each accidental spill, scratch, scuff, bump, or ding creates a subtle deepening of the hue that adds character and a soft, multi-tonal sheen. Full-grain leather is the only leather that can develop a patina, lower grades of leather do not have this attribute.
Crazy horse leather is full-grain leather that has been treated to be exceptionally water-resistant and is prized for its ability to transform scratches and scuffs into a striking patina. A true patina can only be created with time, wear, and tear. A rich patina reflects the story of your life. A patina is also proof that your item is created from the highest quality leather.
Accidents happen. Trekking through the uncharted wilds will expose your leather to the elements. Blazing hot sunlight will fade leather and an unexpected rain shower can leave stains. Shoving your duffle bag into an overhead bin can result in scuff marks and scratches. A briefcase or laptop sleeve sitting on top of a desk is a likely target for an accidental splash of water or hot coffee. Every time you sling your tote or handbag over your shoulder to go shopping, odds are good that you’ll collect a few scratches, scuffs, or dings.
Avoiding accidents is impossible, however, avoiding the damage they cause is completely avoidable. Remember, crazy horse leather has the unique ability to transform spills, scratches, scuff marks, and dings into a tapestry of subtle hues. These markings, when promptly cleaned and conditioned, create a luxurious patina that showcases the beauty and quality of the crazy horse leather.
In the past, lugging around all the supplies to clean and condition your fine leather item was impractical. We worked with leading experts to create not only an exceptional leather conditioning cream to prolong the lifespan and beauty of your item, but to create a lightweight, portable kit that’s sized perfectly to go everywhere and anywhere you need.

The best way to prevent accidental markings from turning into permanent damage is to address the problem area immediately. Caring for your leather to fix accidental damage includes the process used to maintain the leather, so before learning the steps to address each individual issue, you need to know how to clean and condition your leather for annual maintenance:
Leather bags, backpacks, etc. typically need to be cleaned and conditioned once or twice a year. Items that are consistently exposed to harsh elements (extreme heat, rainy weather, etc.) can be conditioned up to 3-4 times per year.
Over-conditioning should be avoided, as that can weaken the leather and leave your bag shapeless. Over-conditioning leaves a sticky residue that attracts dust and grime. Dirt and dust stick to the greasy residue, which can cause problems like stretching, creasing, and the bag losing shape. Too much conditioner can prevent the leather from breathing and cause the fibers to swell and weaken.
There are two ways to over-condition the leather – one is to condition too often, and the other is to apply too much conditioner at a time. A thin coat is all that’s needed. Think of how you use hair conditioner – the right amount leaves the hair soft, shiny, and lustrous. Too much conditioning leaves the hair greasy, shapeless, and limp. Like hair, leather is an organic material – a little bit of conditioning cream goes a long way.
Maintaining your leather item with annual cleaning and conditioning will keep your leather looking and feeling as good as new while extending the bag’s lifespan. To keep your leather looking great, accidental spills and scratches need to be addressed immediately.
Yukon’s leather cleaning kit is designed to be the ideal size to toss into any bag, briefcase, etc. so you can always be prepared to tackle any emergency. The leather pouch the kit comes in is lightweight and portable - a lot of our customers like to reuse the crazy horse leather pouches; they make great coin or pen and pencil holders!
Yukon’s handy-dandy leather cleaning kit has all the supplies you need (the leather-conditioning cream and the applicator) to clean up any accidental damage quickly and efficiently. The supplies are packaged in a lightweight, reusable leather pouch.
Here are the steps you need to follow to keep your crazy horse leather looking its best:
1-ACCIDENTAL LEATHER SCRATCHES
Wipe away any dirt or dust with a clean, dry cloth or your applicator. Rub the scratched area with a circular motion to help redistribute whatever wax coating is left over from the previous conditioning treatment.
Apply the leather conditioning cream directly onto the clean applicator, then rub in a circular motion over the scratched area. Buff away any excess conditioning cream. Let the area air-dry naturally.
For a deep scratch, you can use the conditioning cream to bring the leather back to its previous condition. The scratch will subtly change hue and become part of the lustrous patina. Do not use heat to dry the leather (or any sections of the leather), let it air-dry naturally.
2-ACCIDENTAL SPILLS:
Spills should always be wiped away immediately. Stains can be removed by rubbing the area with a soft, damp sponge. Leather is organic, water or other fluids will displace the natural oils surrounding the fibers. If the spill is left untreated it will leave the unprotected fibers exposed to the air- this can cause stains, cracking, and dryness.
3-WATER DAMAGE:
Leather contains natural oils that keep it soft, flexible, and durable. Water displaces these oils, and if left untreated the oils will combine with the water molecules and evaporate along with the moisture. This leaves the fibers unprotected and the leather prone to cracking, drying, or peeling. A sudden storm won’t destroy your leather (it is water-resistant), however, you should dry off your leather item as soon as possible.
Never leave a leather bag sitting wet.
Never let a bag dry wet – always apply leather conditioner before leaving the leather to dry. The conditioner will lubricate the spaces left by water evaporation to prevent the leather from becoming brittle or cracking. Let the leather air-dry, never use heat on leather.
*Colors can transfer onto leather. A white cloth should always be used to prevent color transference onto your leather.
Don’t be afraid of getting your leather bag wet. Having Yukon’s leather care kit handy allows you to prevent accidental water damage from becoming a permanent stain. It only takes a moment to ensure the bag’s long lifetime of beauty when your kit is conveniently within reach.
]]>Enjoying the scenery also requires protecting it. We take environmental consciousness and sustainability seriously – that is why we proudly support the environmentally responsible practices promoted by the worldwide L.W.G. (Leather Working Group) organization. We only work with tanneries and suppliers that are L.W.G. Gold Medal Certified – which means that environmental sustainability is built into our process from the very first steps (purchasing the hides) to the finished product.
We are passionate about protecting the environment. The only way to guarantee that a product is 100% sustainably produced means working exclusively with other environmentally conscious businesses when creating our products. We never purchase mass-produced hides from large suppliers that do not offer clear and honest hide traceability. By purchasing only from L.W.G. Gold Certified tanneries we can guarantee complete and honest transparency up the supply chain. To earn the L.W.G. Gold certification, a business must pass a series of rigorous inspections and audits. L.W.G.’s comprehensive audit protocol covers every part of the product’s creation, from the raw materials to the finished goods. When you purchase your leather goods from Yukon Bags, you can be assured that the hide came from an L.W.G. Gold Certified tannery where the cows are raised in an environmentally sustainable fashion.
What does the L.W.G. Gold Certification mean to you, the consumer? It is your guarantee that the product you’re investing in was made in an environmentally sound fashion – this certification is solely awarded to tanneries and manufacturers who have passed each audit and have a proven track record for consistently using the best environmentally sound practices in the industry. In a nutshell - the certification covers auditing the supply chain, taking environmental responsibility, and providing clear and honest traceability. L.W.G. certification is awarded to tanneries that demonstrate environmental best practices and performance in all areas of leather production. This extensive audit includes responsible water management, banning chemicals that are toxic to the environment, generating clean energy usage, avoiding harmful greenhouse gas emissions, proper waste management, and transparency in cowhide traceability.
The L.W.G. is a non-profit organization responsible for the world's leading environmental certification for the leather manufacturing industry. It serves as a platform to promote ethical, responsible, and sustainable practices within the industry. Through a transparent approach involving the brands, suppliers, retailers, and leading technical experts, the L.W.G. members are challenged to continuously improve their practices. The L.W.G. audit protocol is recognized worldwide. This protocol is used to assess the environmental performance of leather manufacturers, all the way up the supply chain. The scoring is a comprehensive system in which several topics are rated. To become Gold certified, a business must pass the audits and prove that they operate utilizing the best practices in the leather industry. The L.W.G. audits take place onsite. The auditing procedure and inspections can take several days to complete and require a full 2 years of data to be included in each report. To remain certified, a business must be audited every 24 months.
The L.W.G. awards four types of certifications. From highest-ranking down to merely passing the audit, these are:
The L.W.G. audit covers the environmental best practices and performance in all areas of leather production, from chemical and water management to energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, waste management, and hide traceability. Hide traceability is a vital part of the audit – to earn certification a tannery must prove that the cows are cared for in an environmentally sustainable manner. L.W.G. has several protocols built into the audit process to guarantee traceability throughout the supply chain – this is to ensure that each hide can be traced back to the farm it originated from. This also ensures zero waste – the hides must come from cows that are used for food (steaks, burgers, etc.). To raise animals simply for the hides creates waste – not only the waste of meat but the waste of raw, natural resources like energy and water that are needed to raise cattle. At Yukon we adhere to the L.W.G. policies and the tanneries that we work with are Gold Certified members of the L.W.G.
The Leather Working Group (LWG) audit protocol is a tool to assess the environmental performance of leather manufacturers all over the world. The audit protocols are designed to cover all areas going up the leather supply chain, from the raw, natural materials to the finished product. There is a tailored auditing approach for each different type of operation
The L.W.G. Leather Manufacturer Audit Standard was launched in 2005. This flagship audit certification assesses the environmental performance and compliance of leather manufacturing facilities (also known as tanneries).) The scoring is a comprehensive system in which several topics are rated against best practices in the industry. Our leather standard audits tanneries on the following aspects of their production practice:
The Leather Working Group is the Number 1 globally recognized brand representing responsible leather sourcing to the industry and the consumers. Since the organization was founded, L.W.G- rated leather manufacturers have managed to save an average of 775 Megawatts of energy each year. As a multi-stakeholder group, L.W.G. boasts over 1000 members from across the leather supply chain. This membership roster includes:
L.W.G. certified tanneries use and manage natural resources such as energy and water responsibly. We actively work to reduce gaseous emissions, protect the environment, and to conserve raw natural resources. By supporting the Leather Working Group, Yukon is helping to push the leather industry into a more environmentally sustainable direction.
Yukon exclusively purchases hides from L.W.G. Gold Medal Certified tanneries. This is our guarantee, and yours, that each hide comes from a cow that was raised in a responsible, environmentally aware fashion.
The Environmental Audit Protocol focuses on ensuring that the tanneries are operating in environmentally sound manner. Air emissions, waste disposal, chemical usage, energy consumption, and water usage are all factors of this audit. The goal is to promote traceability, reduce consumption of raw natural resources, and to ultimately put a stop to deforestation. The L.W.G. has collaborated with Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund, and the National Wildlife Federation in their effort to achieve these goals.
At Yukon, we are committed to the environment – which is why we only purchase hides from L.W.G. Gold Certified tanneries.
Your purchases contribute on an individual and a global level towards protecting the environment, sustaining precious natural resources, and providing safe and ethical working conditions. Brands that support L.W.G. continuously strive to follow the best practices in leather manufacturing. By supporting these brands, you are participating in making our planet a better place.
Yukon Bags goes above and beyond to support the L.W.G. standards. We value our employees, our planet, and our planet’s natural resources. Our dedication to producing ethical products in an environmentally sustainable fashion begins with the first step, when we purchase the raw, natural hides. We handpick our raw leather exclusively from responsible tanneries who are L.W.G. Gold Certified. By supporting tanneries that are L.W.G. certified, we are working together to create products in the most sustainable and environmentally conscious fashion possible.
L.W.G. utilizes a transparent approach to promote sustainable practices within the leather industry. The Leather Working Group (LWG) audit protocol is a tool to assess the environmental performance of leather manufacturers all over the world. The scoring is a comprehensive system in which several topics are rated. The Gold Medal Certification is only awarded to those brands who consistently not only meet but exceed all expectations. The standards are based on environmental best practices and performance in the industry. Members are challenged to continuously improve their practices. L.W.G. certification is awarded to tanneries that demonstrate environmental best practices and performance in all areas of leather production, from chemical and water management to energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, waste management and hide traceability.
When you purchase your leather goods from Yukon, you can be assured of the following: the leather is tanned responsibly, we offer complete traceability up the supply chain, we provide responsible use of resources, safe and ethical working conditions, and environmentally friendly treatment of waste and effluents.
Our planet is full of beautiful, natural places to explore and enjoy. You can help to preserve this natural beauty by supporting brands that are active members of the L.W.G. Consumers cast a vote every time they open their wallets – responsible consumption is the best way to encourage other manufacturers to practice sustainable and environmentally safe production.
]]>The first question to ask when searching for the right pack is how it will be used. While canvas and nylon packs may look like good money-saving alternatives to leather, they wind up being costly in the long run. Replacing an inexpensive backpack year after year adds up, and no one enjoys dealing with broken zippers, ripped stitching, or busted straps. A top-quality leather pack can handle years of hard use. The best men’s leather backpacks can last a lifetime if cared for. A quality pack is one that you can rely on for a wide range of activities:
While a nylon or canvas pack works for toting books around, they’re not known for longevity. A top-quality leather bag, when cared for, will hold up rain or shine, year after year.
Not all backpacks are appropriate for workplace settings. A good leather pack is a must- leather is luxurious, and a well-styled leather backpack looks polished and professional. A quality backpack for the workplace will have designated compartments for important papers, a laptop, and any other workplace essentials. The Yukon Leather Backpack by Yukon is a perfect example – it’s a sleek, sophisticated pack with an urbane look that fits well into any office or work environment. The padded laptop compartment securely holds laptops up to 16” and the interior pockets keep your important papers and files well organized. The exterior pockets and built-in keychain holder keep essentials within easy reach.
The plush embossing, vintage buckles, and brass and leather zipper pulls give this dapper case a distinctive look that shows you have arrived! Crafted of full-grain crazy horse leather, this sturdy pack is easily one of the best men’s leather backpacks for any business professional.
When traveling, quality Before investing in a pack, check the quality of the stitching, the zippers, and the leather. Top-quality crazy horse leather can take a beating without losing its shape or sheen. Zippers need to glide smoothly, and meticulous stitching will hold a good backpack together in rough conditions. Although no leather is waterproof, crazy horse leather is the finest quality and has been specially treated to withstand moisture, bumps, and scratches.
The key to keeping leather luxe is keeping it as clean and dry as possible and treating it to a good leather conditioner on a regular basis. Leather is also pliable – shove into an overhead bin on a plane or under the seat of a car, good leather will bounce right back into shape without showing signs of wear or tear.
Leather beats nylon and canvas when it comes to durability. For the best men’s leather backpack, look for one made of crazy horse leather. Crazy horse leather is top-quality full-grain leather that has been treated to a wax formula specifically created to help the leather survive spills, rain, bumps, and scratches while showcasing the beauty of the grain. Check the stitching, the thickness of the leather, and the zippers – the last thing anyone wants on a hike is a backpack that falls apart or zippers that jam. The Harper Large Backpack by Yukon Bags is an ideal pack for rugged adventurers – this hand-crafted pack is created of luxuriously thick full-grain crazy horse leather that can stand up to the elements.
The spacious interior, built-in keychain holder, and handy interior and exterior pockets keep clothing and gear well protected and well-organized. The laptop compartment holds laptops up to 16” and provides solid protection for your valuable electronics. Padded caribou shoulder straps and a stout leather handle are a treat on long hikes when comfort is essential.
The suede lining is detachable, making this hardy backpack easy to clean after exploring the wilderness. A cloth drawstring bag is included with this pack, making it a breeze to keep the Harper clean, dry, and safely stored when not in use. Rich embossing, burnished brass buckles, leather pull-tabs, and YKK zippers are combined to create a backpack that is both dashing and dependable
Most daddies aren’t fond of carrying around a purse, tote, or diaper bag. A luxurious leather backpack looks professional while holding diapers, bottles, and anything else dad and the little nugget will need for the day.
Backpacks can do much more than simply carry books to and from school. A top-quality bag with sophisticated styling can easily replace a cumbersome briefcase. The newest packs have elegant lines and fit smartly into any work or office environment. The pack’s sturdiness is another crucial consideration – the best men’s backpacks should be able to go from work to play without losing looks or durability. Backpacks are ideal for business trips, traveling, work, and play – a great men’s leather backpack can withstand the bumps and scratches it’s subjected to on a hike or when camping while maintaining its luster and patina.
Leather takes the lead when looking for a rugged, reliable pack. Leather also has the advantage of its luxurious look – making it ideal for an office or work environment. When researching men’s backpacks, the quality of the leather matters.
Lower quality leather items may look like a bargain - but will need to be replaced every year or so. An investment in a top-quality full-grain leather backpack is an investment in a pack that can survive a lifetime of wear and tear. Which type of animal hide is used also impacts the longevity of the backpack.
Cowhide is the strongest, most durable leather. For a smart, stylish pack that can handle decades of use, look for full-grain leather. Leather labels can be confusing – “genuine leather” sounds great, but the quality is inferior to authentic full-grain. With so many leather grades to choose from, it’s important to understand what the labels really mean.
Here’s a quick guide on selecting leather:
Crazy horse leather is produced using only the highest quality full-grain cowhide leather. At Yukon, each hide is carefully inspected before being treated to the crazy horse process. Only the top-quality, superior hides are selected for our leather goods.
Once the hide is selected, our skilled leather artisans apply a natural wax that is specifically created to aid in protecting the leather from water, weather, and moisture damage. Next, the artists wax and polish each hide by hand. This painstaking process adds additional protection from normal wear and tear, dirt, dust, and scrapes.
Crazy horse leather is exceptionally durable and develops a striking vintage patina over time. The crazy horse treatment showcases the natural beauty of each hide’s individual grain. An amazing feature of crazy horse leather is its unique ability to transform scrapes, bumps, and so on, into gorgeous multi-hued tones that increase the leather’s rich patina over time. Crazy horse leather is the sturdiest, most resilient leather available. It has been revered for centuries due to its natural beauty and strength.
When searching for the best leather backpack it is important to consider the quality of the hardware. Oftentimes people invest in the highest quality leather only to have the zippers, rivets, and stitching wear out before the leather does.
One of the first things to check is the zipper. The leather may last a lifetime, but not every zipper can stand the test of time. We all know how frustrating it is to deal with a jammed or broken zipper. At Yukon, we work exclusively with YKK zippers. YKK is a Japanese company that has set the industry standard for over 80 years. They have a global reputation for manufacturing the best zippers on the market. They supply half the zippers on Earth – a whopping 7 billion zippers each year! These sturdy zippers are so reliable that they were used in the astronaut’s spacesuits during the first moon landing. YKK builds their zippers from start to finish - they produce their own raw materials, utilize advanced technology, and finish each product in-house.
YKK uses self-locking puller technology, which makes each zipper easy to pull and lock without slipping. Thanks to their square tooth technology, the teeth never separate or jam. These dependable zippers will last for decades and have a solid reputation for consistently gliding smoothly time after time. Attention to detail makes the difference between a product being merely good and a product being great. YKK pays attention to every detail, including the zipper’s appearance. The surface of each zipper is beautifully plated and maintains this finish over time without fading or discoloring. For an exemplary example of a stylish men’s leather backpack that takes every detail seriously, check out the Napa Large Backpack.
Meticulous attention to detail and top-quality materials are used to create this extra-roomy backpack that easily travels from work to play and the gym as well. YKK zippers, precise hand-stitching, and brass buckles and rivets are used by our talented leather artisans to build a dependable bag that is built to last. Ergonomic styling, adjustable leather shoulder straps, and a leather loop handle make this bag comfortable to carry anywhere and everywhere. The striking vintage patina of the luxe crazy horse leather becomes richer and deeper over time.
Contrast stitching, brass hardware, elegantly embossed crazy horse leather, and matching leather pull-tabs are combined to create a bag with a suave style that fits in as easily at work or school as it does in the wilderness. The laptop compartment holds laptops up to 15” and ample interior and exterior pockets provide plenty of organizational space. If you are looking for a gift for a man-on-the-go, the Napa is one of the best men’s leather backpacks on the market.
The next detail on your checklist should be inspecting the quality of the snaps and rivets. Rivets are permanent fasteners that can be used to attach pieces of leather together. They can also be used to add a decorative flair. Low-quality rivets can fall apart – it is important that the snaps and rivets be high quality to produce a backpack that you can count on to hold together. Broken snaps or rivets can destroy the looks of a product and reduce its durability.
How the rivets are attached is another important consideration – it takes a skilled leather craftsman to fix the snaps and rivets properly to create a backpack that you can depend on. At Yukon, our skilled leather artisans pay close attention to detail – we use only the highest quality brass rivets and snaps. Our leather artisans attach each snap and rivet by hand.
Stitching can make or break a backpack. Machine-made stitches can skip a stitch or apply weak loops. Sloppy stitching means the bag will fall apart with use. At Yukon, our leather artisans diligently sew every stitch by hand. This painstaking attention to detail results in a dependable backpack that can stand the test of time.
When shopping for the best men’s leather backpack, size matters. If the pack is going to be used for the gym, hiking, or traveling, you will need a roomy bag with loads of organizational space. A lighter pack can be ideal for short day hikes, or simply when running errands for the day. Finding the right-sized backpack doesn’t have to be confusing. Backpacks are typically measured by considering the Dimensions and Volume of the pack. To fit the body, you will need to measure your Torso and Hip size.
The bag should rest comfortably on the shoulders and place most of the weight on the hips. Legs are typically the strongest part of the body, by letting the hips carry the weight you avoid straining the neck, back, and shoulders. The simplest way to find your correct torso size is to measure the C7 vertebra. You can find this by tilting your head forward and measuring from the bony bulge at the base of the neck to the top of your hips. The pack shouldn’t be wider than the hips – to find your hip size, wrap the measuring tape around the top of the hips, at the base of the waist.
The dimensions of the backpack are the pack’s measurements. On the Yukon website, you can find the dimensions for each pack beneath each photo. The dimensions are the height, width, and length of the backpack. The volume capacity is how much volume (weight) the pack can carry. The simplest way to calculate the volume is by converting the dimensions of the pack into liters. To convert the cubic inches into liters, use the following calculation: 1 liter = 61 cubic inches. Once you have calculated the bag’s volume, you have a great approximation of how much the pack can carry. The following is a list representing the approximate volume your pack should hold based on its use:
To estimate the best fit for your body, check that your body’s torso length is within the pack’s torso range. The backpack’s shoulder straps should conform to the back of your shoulders and the shoulder strap padding should end 2-3 inches below the armpits. Hip belts can support the majority of the pack’s weight. If you are using a hip belt, it should cover the top of your hip bones. Hip belts can be purchased separately at most retailers.
If you have invested in a top-quality, full-grain leather backpack, you will want to take proper care of it. With a bit of care, this quality pack can last for decades. Because crazy horse leather is crafted of the outermost layer of the cow’s hide, it does have some ability to repel dirt, dust, and moisture. Keeping the bag clean and conditioned will offer extra protection from the elements and keep the leather soft and pliable. Leather is an organic material – like your skin, it needs to have vital oils replenished to stay soft and supple. A good leather conditioner will nourish and strengthen the fibers, restore vital oils, and keep your leather backpack soft and flexible.
A little goes a long way with leather conditioners. Over-conditioning your backpack can leave it too soft, causing the pack to lose its shape. Authentic full-grain leather is naturally resistant to moisture and dirt, however, if your pack is consistently exposed to the elements, it will need cleaning and conditioning more often than one that is used mainly for school or in the office. With normal wear and tear your leather backpack should only need conditioning 2-3 times per year. A small amount is all that’s necessary to use, you want it to be easily absorbed into the leather, not gobbed on the surface.
Authentic crazy horse leather is finished leather. Suede, nubuck, and other lower grades of leather are unfinished leather and require a different type of conditioning. You can purchase leather conditioner through a retailer or read our article to learn how to make a D.I.Y. conditioner at home.
A good leather conditioner serves the following purposes:
Extra care needs to be taken if your leather backpack is exposed to water, moisture, or any form of liquid. Crazy horse leather is water-resistant, but this does not mean that it’s safe to leave your bag wet. If your backpack is subjected to spills or rain, always immediately dry it off with a soft, clean cloth. Do not let the pack dry off without first applying a leather conditioner.
Applying the conditioner immediately allows it to seep into the pores and lubricate the spaces left by the evaporating moisture. If you allow the pack to dry without first applying conditioner, your leather pack can shrink, turn dry, and crack. When camping, hiking, or traveling, it’s a great idea to bring your conditioner with you.
Stains can be removed from full-grain leather by rubbing the area with a soft, damp sponge. Always wipe away any excess moisture, dirt, or grime with a clean, soft cloth. Never store your bag while wet – it only takes a minute or two to wipe it clean and dry!
Leather conditioner is simple to use – here are the steps to keeping your backpack looking as sharp as the day you bought it:
With a minimum of care, your crazy horse full-grain leather backpack will last for decades, possibly a lifetime. Now that you know what to look for – take the plunge! Investing in a fine leather backpack shows that you have arrived – and with care, you will have a reliable bag to keep you organized anywhere and everywhere!

]]>High-quality leather will hold its shape, luster, and sheen year after year with a little bit of care. The Yukon Crazy Horse leather backpack is a perfect example, with a minimum of care this rugged bag will retain its shape and beauty for decades to come.
There are three steps to caring for your leather bag:
Always gently wipe away any spills, dirt, or dust before applying conditioner or polish. Many people are confused as to the purpose of leather conditioners and leather polish – they each serve different functions.
Leather conditioner penetrates the outer layer of the leather “skin” to keep it soft and supple. Conditioner also creates a barrier to help prevent water and other elements from seeping in and causing damage. A good leather conditioner will help to prevent the leather from drying out and cracking.
Polish does a fantastic job of adding shine to the leather. Polish should never be applied without first cleaning and conditioning the leather, and you do not want to overdo it. The frequency is dependent upon how often you use your bag. The Yukon Napa backpack is a great example of the durability of genuine full-grain leather. This rugged backpack can handle the toughest adventures while retaining its vintage beauty – just a little bit of polish is all that it takes to restore its stunning burnished glow.
Leather polish can instantly revive a beat-up looking bag. It restores the sheen and can make old leather look as good as new. Polish can be pricey – you can save a few bucks by making your own leather polish using inexpensive ingredients. Another terrific advantage of DIY leather polish is the ability to customize the compound to the exact consistency that you need. Here is a fantastic do-it-yourself leather polish:
If you want a firmer compound increase the amount of beeswax, for a softer polish increase the liquid (sweet almond oil) ratio. Tins and glass jars to hold the polish can usually be found in the dollar stores, and the other ingredients can be found in most grocery stores or on Amazon.
There you have it! An easy D.I.Y. polish to instantly restore the beauty and shine to your genuine leather bag.

Most back-to-school bags take a daily beating, so the first thing to consider when purchasing a great backpack is durability. Students sling backpacks over their shoulders, shove them into cubbies, and drop them on concrete. Backpacks get banged around - saving money on a bargain bag that falls apart is not a great bargain, is it? Cute nylon and canvas bags can be inexpensive upfront but replacing them year after year gets costly. Imitation leather can crack and tear – it may look like the real thing, but the copycats do not have the same stamina as 100% real leather. A genuine full-grain crazy horse leather bag like the Hinton Backpack will last for many years with proper care. This bag also has YKK zippers – the best zippers in the world. Caring for your leather backpack is simple and involves a minimal amount of time – wipe it dry when it gets wet and condition the bag a few times each year.
Zippers and stitching are vital to consider when purchasing a good, reliable backpack. Look for YKK zippers and precision hand-stitching like you see on our Napa Leather Backpack at Yukon Bags. Poor stitching leads to ripped seams and broken straps. Struggling with faulty or broken zippers is frustrating. YKK is well known for producing the most dependable zippers on the market, and hand-stitching denotes a high-quality bag that can hold up for years of rough-and-tumble usage.
Another consideration is comfort. Students must lug their pack every day, from one classroom to the next. Adjustable ergonomic straps ensure that the bag will sit comfortably, reducing the strain on your back. Look for a bag with adjustable, ergonomic straps like our Harper Large Backpack.
A comfortable backpack needs to be lightweight enough for daily use. Cheap, knock-off leather can be heavy. Authentic crazy horse leather is comfortably lightweight and offers the rugged durability that only real leather provides. Always look for genuine full-grain crazy horse leather when purchasing a leather bag or backpack. The expenditure on a high- quality leather bag guarantees comfort and durability, and because full-grain leather can last a lifetime it is a worthwhile investment.
PROTECTION:
A great backpack needs to do more than merely lug your books from one classroom to the next, it should also protect your supplies. Look for a backpack with a dedicated laptop compartment and separate pockets for your pens, pencils, notebooks, etc. Our Harper Leather Backpack is the perfect bag for school needs. This rugged pack is 100% full-grain crazy horse leather. The bag has double-latches to keep everything safe, secure, and dry. This backpack has a padded compartment to protect your laptop, with separate zippered pockets inside and out to organize cellphones, keys, books, and other supplies. The Ergonomic straps provide the ultimate in comfort, and the detachable lining makes cleaning the interior a snap.
When protecting your contents, you need a water-resistant bag. Crazy horse leather is authentic full-grain cowhide that has been buffed with a natural wax to increase water-resistance. Our Frances Leather Backpack is a perfect example of a high-quality crazy horse leather bag. The durable leather and YKK zippers keep everything dry, organized, and safe from the elements. The full-grain crazy horse leather is water-resistant and has a striking vintage patina.
Good organization is vital in a school backpack. Look for a bag with multiple compartments, front and side pockets, and a padded laptop compartment. More compartments and pockets provide better organization and accessibility. Our Napa Large Backpack is a miracle of space and organization. This striking bag accommodates laptops of up to 15”, and the multiple pockets make organizing your supplies a breeze. The padded laptop compartment, secure pockets, and 100% authentic crazy horse leather all provide superior protection against bumps, bangs, and bad weather.
SPACE:Backpacks are built to hold everything from books to clothing. Authentic leather has an edge against the competition - full-grain leather is soft, with enough give to comfortably hold anything that you need. Look for a bag with space for schoolbooks, a dedicated compartment to protect your laptop, and pockets for pens, pencils, and all your other items.
Our Yukon Leather Backpack is the perfect bag to store all your supplies, and the multitude of pockets and compartments allows space for everything, with each thing in its place.
APPEARANCE:
Style is significant to most of us. Leather easily beats out the competition in this department. A high-quality leather bag is a timeless accessory. Crazy horse leather is authentic full-grain leather that has been buffed with a natural wax to resist bumps, scratches, and the elements. This durable leather has a unique color-changing ability – bumps and scratches merely change the hue, creating a burnished vintage glow. Only authentic crazy horse leather has the unique ability to turn bumps and scratches into a stunning variety of hues. This tonal variety is exclusive to crazy horse leather – providing a one-of-a-kind look that ages beautifully.
This buttery-soft leather is deceptively rugged, making it the ideal choice for college and school backpacks. Leather lends a sophisticated edge to every outfit. Due to the natural characteristics that can only be found in authentic full-grain leather, each crazy horse bag has uniquely distinctive markings. The Napa Large Backpack is a perfect example of style and functionality. The embossed leather provides an upscale elegance that easily transfers from the schoolroom to the boardroom. The full-grain crazy horse leather guarantees that age, wear, and tear serve to increase the backpacks beauty. Why blend into the crowd when you can stand out with a chic, unique bag!
BUDGET:
When deciding on a budget for your backpack bear in mind that a high-quality backpack will be more expensive up front, but well worth it in the long run. The price should reflect the quality of the materials and craftsmanship. A bargain looks a lot less appealing when your “bargain” backpack splits its seams and spills your contents. Cheap fabrics and leather knock-offs stain, scratch, and tear. Full-grain crazy horse leather resists tearing, scratching, and staining, and retains its beauty year after year.
The ideal backpack balances appearance with durability. Crazy horse leather has a beautiful vintage patina that provides style and sophistication. This buttery-soft leather is the most durable in the world, making it the ideal choice for a school backpack. Crazy horse leather is easy to care for - simply wipe off moisture when it gets wet and follow up with a leather conditioner to keep the bag supple and soft. That’s it! Clean and condition your bag and it can last for a lifetime – now that’s a great deal!

]]>There are three basic steps you need to follow to keep your leather bag soft, supple, and looking as magnificent as the day you bought it. Clean, condition, and protect (polish) your genuine leather bag and it will last for decades.
The first step in caring for your bag is to clean it – always wipe spills away immediately using a soft cloth, and wipe dirt and dust away before conditioning your bag.
Leather conditioner should be used a few times each year, more often if your bag or backpack leads an active life. The Harper Large Leather Backpack is a perfect example – it will handle hike after hike and retain its striking sheen and shape when properly cared for. The leather conditioner works to lubricate the leather fibers, keeping the leather soft and supple. Conditioners also help to enhance the patina and luster and create a barrier to help repel stains. There are several good leather conditioners available for purchase, or you can get crafty and make your own.
The advantages of making a D.I.Y. leather conditioner goes further than merely saving a few pennies – crafting your compound allows you to play with the ingredient ratios and create a custom conditioner that is perfect for you! There are plenty of great DIY leather conditioning recipes. Here are two of the best:
D.I.Y. LEATHER CONDITIONER:
Most soaps cannot be used on leather due to their harshness and additives. Baby soap is the exception and can be combined with a couple of ingredients to make a good DIY conditioner. Be sure to select a pure, natural baby soap with zero additives or coloring agents that could stain. Always clean your bag and make sure that it is free from dirt, dust, and spills before applying the treatment. To make a leather conditioner with baby soap - mix 1 cup water, one tablespoon of baby soap, and a couple of drops of white vinegar. Dip a soft, clean cloth into the mixture and wring out excess – cloth should be damp, not wet. After conducting a patch test on a tiny, hidden area (to check for any adverse reactions), you can apply the wax to the entire bag. Gently massage the conditioner in, then wipe away any excess. Always allow leather bags to air dry.
Beeswax can be used to make a terrific leather conditioner. Combined with coconut or shea butter and a few other inexpensive ingredients you can create a rich, nourishing leather conditioner that will preserve your bag’s beautiful vintage patina. Here is an easy D.I.Y. recipe:
INGREDIENTS:
INSTRUCTIONS:
You can create your ideal conditioner by adjusting the ratio in the compound. For a firmer conditioner with a more paste-like consistency adjust the ratio to contain more beeswax or coconut butter. For a softer mixture use more almond oil.
Always spot-test a tiny piece of your bag before applying to the entire surface. As different leather conditioning agents create varying reactions, it is always a good idea to test a small, inconspicuous patch (from the bottom of the bag is a well-hidden spot) before applying to the entire bag.

Leather conditioner can be purchased commercially, or you can do it yourself with inexpensive ingredients at home. There are advantages to making your leather conditioner outside of the fact that you can save money. Creating a custom mixed leather conditioner allows you to personalize the scent, thickness, and consistency of the product to produce a leather balm or wax that is perfect for your needs.

A good leather conditioner serves the following purposes:
Leather conditioner is formulated to be easily absorbed into the leather to nourish and strengthen the fibers to restore softness and flexibility. Authentic full-grain leather is naturally resistant to dirt – however, even the best leather will get dirty with use. Leather that has been exposed to the elements (water, dirt, dry heat) will need cleaning and conditioning more often than an item that is rarely used.
Over-conditioning your leather item can leave it too soft and can cause it to lose its shape. A small amount of conditioner is all that is needed, and typically leather only needs to be conditioned 2-4 times per year.
CAN THE SAME LEATHER CONDITIONER BE USED ON ALL TYPES OF LEATHER?
The short answer is no. Leather comes in a variety of forms - at its most basic level, a leather product can either be made from finished or unfinished leather. Any leather that has been labeled as suede, nubuck, aniline, semi-aniline, pull up, or raw leather is unfinished.
Crazy horse leather is 100% natural cowhide that has undergone a specific treatment process and it is finished leather. Most homemade and commercial leather conditioners are great for finished leather, but for unfinished it is best to adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions. An outstanding example of a durable finished bag is the Avalanche Leather Duffle Bag. This bag’s buttery softness and beautiful vintage patina disguise the fact that this is one tough bag that will retain its beauty for decades with just a bit of care.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE LEATHER GETS WET?
You will want your leather backpack to be able to withstand dirt, dust, and inclement weather. Your beautiful leather backpack will not do you any good on a hike if you are afraid to get it wet. It is understandable to be concerned after spending hundreds of dollars on a quality bag, but here’s the good news – if you have invested in a 100% authentic crazy horse leather bag such as the Yukon Napa backpack it can survive the most rugged conditions year after year, decade after decade, with minimal care.
Crazy horse leather is water-resistant, however, that does not mean that it is safe to leave the bag wet. Water can stain any leather, even the highest quality leather. This doesn’t mean that you need to panic every time it rains, just take the following precautions to keep your bag looking as splendid as the day you bought it:
DOES LEATHER SHRINK WHEN IT IS WET?
Leather that is left untreated will shrink. Leather is organic - when water displaces the natural oils this leaves the leather fibers exposed to the air, causing shrinkage. This can easily be prevented by wiping the bag with a leather conditioner while it is still damp. The conditioner will seep into the pores and replace the vital lost oils to keep your bag’s shape, softness, and suppleness.
WHEN TO USE LEATHER CONDITIONER:
This depends on how often you use the bag and under what conditions. Typically, leather only needs treatment a couple of times each year. If you are an adventurer and your bag must last under the most extreme conditions, it is advisable to condition your bag three or four times each year. If your bag gets wet or rained on, always apply conditioner before allowing the bag to dry out. When used as needed, a leather conditioner can extend your bag’s life indefinitely.
HOW TO USE LEATHER CONDITIONER:
WHAT AMOUNT OF LEATHER CONDITIONER IS THE RIGHT AMOUNT?
A thin layer is all that you need. Always test a small, hidden spot (like from the bottom of the bag) before applying all over. Leather begins as a living, breathing organ. Leather conditioner is vital to replenish the natural oils that get lost over time, however too much will prevent the leather from breathing and cause the fibers to lose shape. A little bit goes a long way.

]]>The Texture can help you determine if the leather is authentic or imitation. Full-grain leather has a rich, elegant finish with naturally occurring pores and imperfections. Because real, full-grain leather begins as living skin, the grain will always be random and unique.
Full Grain leather has many strands that will naturally fray around the edges. Imitation leather is machine-cut plastic and will have smooth edges.
on a small patch of leather. Authentic leather has pores and will absorb water. Water will bead up or roll-off imitation leather.

]]>Weather does not always follow our plans. If you find yourself (and your leather bag) unexpectedly soaked there are steps that you should take to protect your leather goods. If your bag happens to be made with Crazy Horse leather, like the striking Avalanche leather duffle you are one step ahead. Crazy horse leather is 100% authentic natural cowhide that has been specially treated to be water-resistant. Do not confuse water-resistant with waterproof – water resistance just gives you an extra boost of protection until you can care for your bag.
Here is the good news – with a little planning ahead, you can always be prepared to rescue your leather backpack, bag, or briefcase if the leather gets wet. Here are the steps you should take:
HOW TO WATERPROOF YOUR BAG
Beeswax can be purchased online or in a store. You can make your own beeswax water-repellant cream by following these steps. You will need:
Pour the extra-virgin olive oil into your glass container. Break the beeswax into small pieces before adding to the jar. Place the jar into a pan of cold water. Heat the water, continuously stirring the mixture. Heat (do not boil) and stir until all the beeswax has melted.
Next, cool your mixture. Stir continuously as it is cooling - it is finished when the mixture as stiffened into a workable cream. You might want to put on some music – the mixture will need to be stirred for roughly 20 minutes.
Spot test on a small part of the bag. Ideally, you want to test a patch with the least visibility – the bottom of the bag is a good place for a patch test.
Apply the treatment with a clean, soft cloth. Use circular motions as you gently buff the leather. Continue buffing until you have built up a protective coating.
D.I.Y. LEATHER CONDITIONER
Leather needs regular conditioning treatments, and cleaning and conditioning your bag after it gets wet is crucial. There are a lot of good leather conditioners available online and in stores, but you can save money and create a custom conditioner using a few simple ingredients. You will need:
Use this ratio when mixing your ingredients: ½ part butter, ½ part beeswax, 2 parts oil. You can adjust this ratio to create your custom conditioner. If you want a firmer, paste-type compound, use more beeswax and butter. For a softer cream use more oil.
Taking the time to waterproof, clean, and condition your leather bag will pay-off in the long-run. An authentic leather bag can be pricey, taking good care of your investment is smart. Regularly treating your leather to a good conditioning treatment will help your bag retain its suppleness, softness, and sheen. ]]>FULL-GRAIN LEATHER
Full-grain leather is the highest quality of leather. It’s the real deal, the absolute best that you can buy. It carries a higher price tag than the other types of leather, but it can not be beat for its richness, buttery softness, and depth of character. Full-grain leather is the full, unadulterated hide in its natural form. To make Crazy horse leather, full-grain leather is buffed to a soft glow with natural wax. This treatment creates a gorgeous, rugged leather with a burnished, vintage look. Crazy horse leather is only created using top-of-the-line full-grain leather. With a minimum of care, this type of leather can last decades, even a lifetime.
There are three full layers in authentic full-grain leather. The top layer is the grain – this is the part that you see. The fibers are dense and tightly woven making this the strongest part of the hide. A good way to check for authenticity is to look for “imperfections” in the grain, as real leather should have a few bumps and scratches. These imperfections add to the character and beauty of the grain.
On Crazy horse full-grain leather (leather that has been treated to the crazy horse process) the scratches and bumps change color tone, adding a striking depth to the rugged bags. A perfect example is the Yukon Harper backpack.
The next layer is the junction. This is where the fibers start to loosen up and the grain transitions to the split (suede) part of the hide.
The split is the deepest layer of the three. This is the layer that suede is composed of. This layer is made up of softer, looser fibers and is the weakest part of the hide.
THE OTHER LEATHERS – ALTERING THE HIDE
Manufacturers alter the top grain of the hide to create less expensive types of leather. Although top grain and genuine sound like high-quality leathers, they are weaker and not as soft, durable, or lustrous as authentic full-grain leather.
TOP GRAIN LEATHER
To create top grain leather, the manufacturer sands the grain of the hide. This is usually done to hide imperfections. Sanding weakens the leather – a top grain leather backpack will not be as durable as a full-grain leather backpack. Sanding also takes away the character of the leather. The natural imperfections, marbling, texture, and color variations are what make full-grain leather bags so beautifully unique. Every full-grain leather bag has distinct markings. When you purchase a full-grain leather bag you can be assured that your bag is one-of-a-kind.
Top grain leather is separated from the split layer, then sanded. This creates a plastic appearance and weakens the leather. Top grain leather does not age well and will not develop a patina with age as full-grain leather does.
SOFT LEATHER
“Soft” leather is a generic term given to any type of leather deemed to be “soft”. Soft leather can be made from calfskin, eels, lamb, deer – any sort of exotic animal.
Soft leather that is created from calfskin is made from the underside of the hide. This is how suede is produced. Suede is soft and beautiful, but it is not a durable leather. This type of leather gets dirty easily, it also absorbs liquids and stains.
Lambskin (also known as sheepskin) is composed of natural lightweight layers and has a soft, velvety texture. Lambskin does a terrific job of keeping the cold out, despite it being thin and lightweight. This is a delicate leather that is likely to stretch over time. It is not as durable as cowhide.
Deerskin is also softer than cowhide and provides natural resistance to the cold. The natural fiber in deerskin traps air inside, which makes the leather feel lighter and softer. It is surprisingly durable but does not stand up to wear and tear as well as cowhide.
To sum it up – soft leather is any leather that is soft, lightweight, wearable, and comfortable. Just do not expect it to hold up for as long or as well as authentic full-grain leather.
GENUINE LEATHER
Sounds great, right? Genuine leather is made from real leather – however, it is the lowest quality of the leather on the market. Genuine leather does not have the same rich, soft sheen as the higher quality leathers. It also lacks the resilience and durability of the higher quality full-grain leather. Genuine leather is used to produce a wide array of cheaper leather products and is perfect for people whose priority is to save money on a purchase. In the long run, however, a product made from full-grain leather is a much better investment.
Genuine leather is created by bonding together several layers of low-quality leather. The layers are glued together then painted to imitate the look of a higher-quality leather.
VINTAGE LEATHER
“Vintage” leather usually refers to the highest-quality full-grain leather that has aged to a beautiful, burnished patina. Due to the unique imperfections in authentic vintage leather, it is next to impossible to accurately imitate the look. Vintage leather refers to leather that is 20-100 years old. Anything older than 100 years is “antique”.
The process of turning full-grain leather into Crazy horse leather creates an instantly vintage look, as well as a tougher, more durable bag. This process helps the leather gracefully age while retaining its softness and patina.
High-quality leather beautifies as it ages, developing a soft, burnished patina. Scratches and bumps in crazy horse leather change color-tones, creating striking variations in the leather. If you own an authentic vintage full-grain leather item, you own a unique piece of art – and should take care of it accordingly. But the Big Question remains – is it safe to explore the outdoors while the pandemic is still raging?
The debate is on – many experts claim that it is safe to go out if you follow the safety guidelines. Others take a hard line against going out, for fear of spreading the virus. The consensus is that it can be safe if you follow the recommended guidelines.
Here are the answers to frequently asked questions of what you need to do to stay safe while exploring the wilderness during the pandemic.
The short answer is that sticking close to home is the safest. Follow the local government guidelines, practice social distancing, and avoid crowded areas. Restrictions may vary from one area to the next, you need to be aware of the guidelines that are specific to the location where you are camping or hiking.
Exploring areas that are not close to home can be risky, according to the experts. If you choose to travel, you will be exposed to germs that may be different from those in your local area. You will need to stop for gas, food, and bathroom breaks, and you are exposing yourself and others every time you step out of the car. Use your best judgment if you choose to travel, and load up on sanitizer, soap, and face masks. Carpooling is a bad idea right now – follow the same guidelines that you use at home, and only travel with other members of your household.
Parks and playgrounds get crowded, which makes them off-limits. Some hiking trails are open, and medical experts say that hiking is safe if you hike only with members of your household in uncrowded areas. In other words - if the trail you are on gets crowded, leave.
The Washington Trails Association wta.org advises hikers to stay at least 6ft apart and cover coughs or sneezes with an elbow. They warn hikers to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water before touching anything in the home.
Look for parks or trails that are uncrowded or chose times that are not crowded to visit. You can check any of the sites on this list for camping closures, trail-related, and trail event cancelations:
The good news for hikers, campers, backpackers, and people who love exploring nature is that the outdoors is a safe, and a great, place to be right now if you follow the guidelines.
You do not need to wear a mask while exploring the (uncrowded) outdoors, but you should always carry one. Stay 6ft. away from other people and cover your mouth with your elbow if you cough or sneeze. Covering your mouth with your elbow is safer than using your hand because hands are hotbeds for germs. Here are the official guidelines as posted on americanhiking.org:
Trails, parks, and campgrounds do not magically stay clean and hike-able. Crowding these places puts extra strain on the people trying to maintain them during the pandemic. If you suffer an injury while exploring the outdoors, you are adding a burden to an already overloaded medical team.
Be courteous – emergency responders and medical teams are overworked and overwhelmed with handling this pandemic. Choosing to hike, camp, or backpack in an unsafe area “for the thrill of it” puts unnecessary stress onto an already overloaded system.
Camping can be a safer activity than staying indoors if you follow the safety guidelines and choose an uncrowded area. The same is true for hiking, glamping, and backpacking during the pandemic, but you must maintain high sanitation standards. Here is a handy checklist of what should be in your backpack to combat contracting Covid-19:
A reliable, sturdy backpack is a necessity while hiking, camping, and backpacking. If your backpack is loaded with the necessary food and safety supplies but falls apart during your trip – well, you have now lost the important items that you need.
It is worth investing in a sturdy backpack that can hold up under the toughest conditions to ensure your safety and the safety of your stuff. We recommend a backpack crafted from authentic Crazy Horse leather, as this is the highest grade of leather on the market and is prized for its rugged durability. The Harper Backpack is 100% authentic crazy horse leather and can last 30 years or longer with proper care. (see the Yukon Bags Care Guide for the best advice on leather-care). This sturdy bag has double-latches, zippered pockets, and a semi-removable liner for easy cleaning. This beautiful bag even has a special compartment to protect your laptop.
While camping, hiking, or backpacking, follow the Leave No Trace guidelines. These guidelines should be followed year-round but are crucial during the pandemic while crews are already overloaded. Respect the local wildlife, properly dispose of waste, minimize campfire impacts, and, most importantly – leave the site in spotless condition. If you find a beautiful bit of nature that you would love to bring home – please don’t. Leaving the things that belong in nature where you found them is the right thing to do.
The world is a beautiful, amazing place. Explore courteously and safely and leave a positive impact.
Happy Exploring!
]]>Yukon Crazy horse leather is crafted using 100% authentic natural full-grain leather that has been imbued with natural wax and oils to create rugged water and weather-resistant leather with a beautiful patina. The Frances Backpack is a stellar example of a tough backpack with a sleek, polished look. This versatile bag is resilient enough to survive a lifetime of adventure and the rich, espresso colored leather glows with a soft burnished sheen.
The key to keeping your investment in tip-top shape is as simple as cleaning the bag when it gets dirty and repairing damage as soon as possible. In this handy-dandy easy guide, we will show you how to care for your quality leather bag.
Every Yukon Crazy Horse leather bag is crafted from the highest quality leather. This premium leather ensures that your bag has the grit to handle the toughest adventures while retaining its shape and a buttery-soft feel. The Crazy Horse Leather Backpack is a perfect example of form and function - the sturdy straps fit comfortably over the shoulders for long treks, and the rustic brown leather lends a stylish vintage vibe. Taking a few steps today to care for your bag can guarantee its durability and beauty for decades to come.
Authentic leather starts out as a living, breathing organ. Real leather works the same way as your skin does – sweat glands produce water to prevent overheating, and sebaceous glands produce oil to protect the skin by providing a barrier to lock in moisture. Leather is porous – water can seep through the pores in the leather, displacing the natural oils found between the cowhide fibers. As the water evaporates it leaves the fibers stripped of these vital oils. Loss of natural oils creates cracks in the leather. Dryness, cracks, and flaking can be prevented with a minimum of care. Full-grain leather behaves like your skin – with proper cleansing and moisturizing your Yukon authentic leather bag will last a lifetime. Scratches, bumps, and irregularities increase the natural beauty of the grain by deepening the hue and producing a striking multi-toned effect. The Avalanche Duffle Bag is a prime example. The simplicity of the design highlights the opulence of Crazy horse leather. Scrapes and scratches intensify the color-tones on the surface creating a striking rustic effect.
By taking a few steps to protect your investment, you can ensure that your Yukon leather backpack will last a lifetime. Here is the easy guide on caring for your authentic Crazy Horse leather bag:
Keeping the leather free from dust, dirt, and moisture is the first step to take when caring for your bag. Every Yukon bag is built to last – take your Yukon bag on your wildest adventures! Bump it, scratch it, bang it around with no worries - just be sure to wipe off any dirt and moisture at the end of the day. The Archibald Duffle Bag is a prime example of the perfect travel bag – roomy enough to hold all your gear, this rugged bag has an elegant design that fits in everywhere from off-roading to the office. By providing a little T.L.C. (tender, loving care) after each outing you can keep your bag in top-notch condition.
When cleaning, conditioning, or moisturizing your bag, always do a patch test before applying products to the entire surface. Certain brands may react differently - as leather is a natural, organic product it is always best to test a small area first.
Here is what you will need to clean your Crazy horse leather bag:
Another plus to owning a Yukon bag is Crazy horse leather’s unique reaction to bumps and scratches. Scratches increase the bag’s beauty by changing hue and producing a striking multi-toned effect. This reaction is exclusive to Crazy horse leather, making it the Number 1 choice for use in producing rugged, reliable bags with the elegant beauty to effortlessly fit in anywhere. Scratches add a beautiful patina to the leather, but deep scratches and cracks may need to be treated to retain your bag’s vintage beauty.
Here is what you will need to fix any scuffs, scrapes, scratches, or cracks:
Crazy horse leather is prized for both its durability and its rustic beauty. The natural wax used to treat the leather provides weather and water-resistance, and the premium quality of the 100% authentic cowhide means that the bag can take a beating while still retaining its luxurious sheen. ]]>What? You mean you don’t know?
Okay, we’re joking because the answer will likely vary from person to person. There isn’t any clear and concise definition for one or the other. Think of it like this a backpack was a term coined by the United States to refer to a pack (or sack) that you carry on your back. A rucksack comes from the German words “Rucken” meaning “back” and sack meaning “bag” or pack. So a rucksack is basically a backpack.
So if you’re looking online and getting the two confused you’re not alone. We’re going to help you understand what are some differences you’ll usually see when talking about a backpack and a rucksack.
When most people think of backpacks, they probably think of the things students keep their school books in. Or if you’re fond of the outdoors you might think of the bag you use to carry everything you need for hiking or spending a day in the woods. The general idea of a backpack is something that you carry on your back and has enough space for what you’d need for the day.
Typically, a backpack isn’t what you would bring for an overnight trip or a longer excursion because it doesn’t have space. A backpack will typically have numerous pockets and can have a main opening from the top, sides or middle. It might have multiple large openings to divide your things and access them easily. Our leather backpacks are great for anything you have in mind for the day.
A rucksack is like a backpack but it can be a little different. It usually has one main opening at the top of the back. It might have a few smaller ones but typically a large one at the top. More openings mean more weight and since a rucksack is designed for carrying more stuff, the lighter the pack the better. A rucksack is typically made to carry everything you’d need for a few days and that’s why it’s commonly used by the military. It is a great way to keep a soldier’s gear ready to go and keep it light enough for a soldier to carry over long distances.
]]>There are all sorts of travel bags designed to suit a range of needs. Whether you are leaving for a day or a week changes the type of bag you need. Yukon Bags has a number of bags that can suit your travel needs but there are sometimes other types of travel bags needed.
Backpacks are great for day trips. They hold just what you need to be out and about for a day in the woods or around town. They are compact and lightweight enough to be carried just on the shoulders, but for some hiking trips, a hip strap might be used to distribute weight to the legs. We have a wide selection of leather backpacks that are comfortable and durable for whatever you might have planned.
Duffle bags are larger than a backpack and good for weekend trips or overnight trips. It holds enough for a few days and can be easy to carry over the shoulder or by hand. It should be used for lighter items because it cannot be carried over both shoulders or on the hip. So, it is not a good choice for hiking or day trips out in the wildness that require a lot of walking. We have a range of duffle bags that are great for traveling around the world.
Rolling suitcases are commonly used for longer trips. If you plan on staying away for a week or more then you need the space of a rolling suitcase. These suitcases are also not carried on the body so they are good for plenty of weight. They aren’t designed for taking along on an outdoor trip but made more for vacationers and travelers that plan on staying indoors with their luggage.
Messenger bags are ideal for small items that you want to keep close and have at hand while traveling. Since they are carried on just one shoulder, they are not ideal for heavy items and they don’t carry enough to be worthwhile on hiking or outdoor trips. Many people choose to use a shoulder bag to carry their electronics that they want to keep safe and secure. Yukon bags have a number of leather shoulder bags with comfortable straps.
]]>So how does thick, rugged leather breathe just as well as thin fabric?
Well, think of your own skin, it allows air and water through and it’s relatively thick and durable. The reason is that your skin has pores that allow for air to flow into your skin. A cow’s skin works the same way and is filled with pores. The pure, quality leather that you get when you buy our Yukon Bags, retains those pores and allows air to flow through the bag. You want to buy things that are 100% leather because if you buy synthetic leather or bonded leather then you are getting leather that doesn’t have these pores. That leather has no ability to breathe and therefore is more susceptible to mold and rot.
Now when we say leather breathes, we don’t just mean that it allows air through. There is a bit of a process that occurs when leather “breathes.” When leather inhales it absorbs moisture from the air around it and draws this in deep into the fibers. As this moisture seeps in, it pushes old oils in the leather out to the surface. By clearing out this old oil, the pores become open for new oils to seep in.
When the leather was part of a cow, the cow would produce oils to lubricate the skin and replace the oils. Since your leather bag is no longer part of the cow, proper care of a leather bag means that you’ll have to be the one to provide the new oil. This is why regular conditioning with leather oil or cream is essential to the long life of your bag.
When it comes to leather, not all leather is created equally. It is important to know the different types of leather so that you know the quality of the leather items that you are buying. Leather can vary based upon what part of the cow that it comes from.
Full Grain Leather is so-called because it comes from the top layer of the cow’s hide and includes all the grain with it. This type of leather retains the toughness of the hide but it also includes the imperfections. This is the highest quality leather and it can be very difficult to work with. It also absorbs oils over time and develops its own patina. We use full-grain leather on all our bags.
After Full Grain Leather comes Top Grain Leather. This is leather that comes from the top layer of skin from blemished hides. These hides are sanded down to get rid of the imperfections and then it is pigmented or stained to give it a nice look.
This type of leather is much smoother than full-grain leather and it is more flexible. This makes it great for high-end leather bags because it is so strong and durable. However, it can stretch over time if not cared for properly.
Corrected Grain leather can also be referred to as Split Grain leather. This is leather that is made after the top layer of the skin is taken off. This type of leather tends to be tougher because it does reside under the top layers of the cow’s skin. This is commonly chosen for leather products that do not require the leather to be soft, like in furniture.
This type of leather is sanded just like top grain leather. It is then painted and embossed with a leather pattern to give it a natural leather appearance. These processes affect the breathability of the leather.
This type of leather is made from the scraps that are left over after the other parts have been used to make higher quality leather. These scraps can also include dust and shavings from the leather process. These scraps are bonded together with polyurethane or latex on top of a fiber sheet. It is then painted to look like full-grain leather. This is the lowest grade of leather
]]>You’ve probably already realized that there is something pretty special about having a leather bag. It has character and personality that is missing in other packs. They also require a little bit of extra care to keep them in good condition and ready for whatever adventure you have planned next.
Humidity is the enemy of any leather item and you must store your items in a way that keeps them safe from it as much as possible. You want to store your leather items in a place that is cool and dry. Humidity in the air means moisture and moisture can lead to mold and too much moisture can even cause your leather to rot. High humidity areas such as attics and basements should be avoided as potential storage areas for your leather items. You should also make sure to avoid sunlight when storing your bags as this can fade the color and cause the bags to dry out.
If you are planning to put your leather bags up for a significant period of time you might consider putting them in a storage bag or tote. You want to make sure that whatever container you choose is breathable. Proper airflow is necessary to keep the bags dry and cool. An easy way to make a breathable container is to get a sealed plastic bag and poke holes in it. Make sure air can flow above and below your leather bags. You can also choose a pillowcase or other fabric bag. Never put your leather bag in a sealed plastic tote because this will not allow the leather to breathe.
You don’t want to store your leather bag by hanging it. This can stretch out the handles of the bag over time. Another tip is to stuff the bag full of bubble wrap, acid-free paper or plastic air cushion bags so that it will keep its shape. Avoid using newspaper as the ink can transfer to the leather.

Genuine leather is a vague term but it typically refers to the leather after the top layer of skin has been taken off. The top layer of skin tends to be tough and hard to work with and therefore not suited to soft leather goods. Genuine leather is made completely from leather and it does not include any other additives or fillers. However, it is made from the lowest grade of leather. It is not full grain or top grain leather but rather what is left over after these higher quality leathers have been created that is why we use only full-grain leather for all of our products.
Genuine leather sounds good but it is only used for cheaper made goods and not for high-quality leather items. While genuine leather may look like high-quality leather because it is painted and embossed, it will not hold up the way a top-grain or full-grain leather bag would. It will show it’s wear over time and the color will fade or change over time. Another downside to this type of leather is that it is also more susceptible to stains.
However, when properly cared for a genuine leather product can last for several years. It is also much more affordable for someone looking for a leather item but does not have the budget for a high-end bag. The biggest thing to remember about genuine leather is that it is among the lowest quality of the leather (only above bonded leather) and you should not pay a premium price for leather that only sounds like it is of the highest quality.
When you make a purchase, be sure that you pay for full-grain leather as our Yukon Bags
We offer a wide range of unique bags at Yukon bags and knowing the right one for you can be difficult. Here are just a few of the different types of bags and their uses.
Backpacks are the most common type of bag used by students and hikers. They are able to carry everything that is needed and distribute the weight over the shoulders. Backpacks can vary in style and number of pockets depending on their intended use. For example, our Harper backpack has a top opening and a number of pockets for organizing supplies. Our Hess backpack in contrast only has a single opening at the top and is perfect for books, notebooks, and laptops.
Briefcases are typically used in the workplace and in recent years designed to carry laptop computers. They are made to carry less weight than a backpack because they are carried by one hand or over a single shoulder. Briefcases tend to have a more professional style and look to them much like our Plume Messenger Bag
Travel bags are used by people who are planning a long trip and need the space to carry a number of belongings with them. Many people also refer to these as suitcases or luggage. Typically, they have wheels for easy transport and come in a number of sizes and styles.
Weekender is a small bag that is made for a trip that is only expected to last a few days. Some people may also call it a carry-on bag because it is the size of a bag you can carry on a plane. These bags are also typically on wheels but are much smaller than most travel bags.
A satchel is a type of bag that hangs on the shoulder but crosses over the body so that the bag rests on the opposite hip from the shoulder the strap is on. These bags are good for carrying just a few items or a laptop computer. These bags used to be the choice of bike couriers and paperboys because they were comfortable to wear for long periods and were more secure than say a messenger style bag.
Briefcase are bags that are typically carried over one shoulder and do not always cross the body. They are more likely to have a secure closure because messengers would need to keep important documents safe. Today messenger bags are often the choice of students or professionals that are looking for something less formal than a briefcase.
Duffle bags are larger bags that tend to be cylindrical and seal at the top. They have handles and a shoulder strap. Duffle bags are typically used for storing more items like clothing and supplies that won’t be carried for extended periods of time because it is only slung over one shoulder. They are great for overnight or weekend travel. Yukon Bags has a number of high-quality leather duffle bags here.
Tote bags are small bags that can be carried over the shoulder that are good for groceries or a few books or small items. They are usually made of canvas or other fabric. Tote bags are also popular for the beach because they tend to dry out quickly. You may check our totes here.
A bucket bag is a tall bag with a circular cross-section that is typically closed with a drawstring. It is so-called because it resembles the shape of a bucket. Bucket bags are part of a growing trend in handbags and are becoming popular as a smaller version of the larger tote style purses.
Camera bags range from general bags that are good for storing cameras to bags that are specially designed to carry certain types of cameras. For a high-quality camera, it is necessary to have a high-quality bag that will protect it without damaging it. A wide range of materials is used for camera bags from fabric and canvas to durable leather.
Whatever style of bag you need for your next adventure Yukon Bags has a durable and high-quality option that will be just right for you.

If you search how to clean your backpack, you’ll find tons of remedies from wet wipes to lemon juice and just about everything in between. While some of these might work, they also run the risk of damaging or weakening the leather. You also run the risk of getting bad advice and making the stains in your bag worse. Your best bet is to buy a leather cleaner that is specially designed to clean a leather bag.
The first thing that you want to do is empty out your bag. Next, take a toothbrush with soft bristles and brush away any dirt and debris that is on the bag. You want to make sure you get it all because if you have debris on the bag when you clean it, you could scratch the leather.
Once the debris has been removed you can take the professional leather cleaner that you purchased and test it on a small, inconspicuous spot to make sure it works and does not damage your bag. Once you are sure it works, follow the instructions on the cleaner to clean any spots on your leather backpack.
If the leather cleaner doesn’t work you might want to seek help from a professional. If the stain is set in or is an ink stain it might be too tough for at-home cleaning products. There are professionals who can clean the leather bag for you and will be able to clean the bag without damaging it.
After you have cleaned your bag it is a good idea to give it good conditioning.
]]>If your leather gets wet it can be a problem. It’s not the wetness that causes problems with the leather it’s the drying process. As leather dries it tends to lose moisture and this includes the natural oils of the leather that keep it soft. The important thing is to never try and dry your leather with anything like a hair dryer or leaving it out in the sun, this can cause the leather to harden and become brittle.
Let the leather air dry by hanging it up somewhere in a cool but dry place. Once the leather has dried to where it is only slightly damp you want to apply a leather conditioner to the leather. This will help replace the oils that are being lost through the drying process and prevent more oils from being lost and it dries further. You want the coating of conditioner to be relatively thick. Massage it well into the leather and then leave it to dry for several hours or even overnight.
Once the leather has dried completely you want to check over the entire bag and make sure there are no dry or rough spots. If you find any, massage more leather conditioner into the rough spots and leave to dry again.
All of our bags and leather products can hold up to getting wet as long as they are treated with proper care afterward. For more tips on caring for your leather bag and other Yukon products please visit our care guide.
]]>Things moved toward a change with Henry Merriam. In 1878 he has issued a patent for a knapsack. The pack had a metal frame and was designed to shift weight away from the body. It was developed for the United States Army and was meant to make things easy on soldiers by freeing them from straps and fasteners. It never really caught on because while it was functional it was very uncomfortable.
In 1882, another innovation came along from Camille Poirer of Duluth. He designed a pack that sat low on the back of the wearer and it included a head strap. This allowed the user to be able to carry their belongings and a canoe. The bag was made of durable canvas and was secured by straps and buckles. Its shape was specially designed to fit in the bottom of the canoe. This design of the bag is still in use today. Even our own Harper Bag is similar to this time-honored design.
In 1908, Ole Bergen tried his hand at designing a pack for hiking and hunting. The pack combined the soft material of a sack with thin tubular steel that followed the curve of the back. The design became very popular and traveled the world. In 1924 a wooden frame pack designed by Trapper Nelson became popular. It used canvas bands that cushioned the load on the shoulders and it was less bulky than the Duluth bag.
In 1938, Gerry Cunningham switched out heavy buckles for lightweight zippers. This made his pack lighter and better for rock climbing. In 1950, Ake Nordin designed a canvas pack with a metal frame that kept the pack higher and closer to his back. Just two years later the backpack would be transformed by Dick and Nina Kelty. They used aluminum to create lightweight frames and parachute material was used to create soft packs. With a contoured frame, soft shoulder straps and a waist strap this quickly became very popular with anyone who spent their time outdoors.
In 1967, Greg Lowe decided that external frame packs just weren’t the way to go. He created a pack that was soft enough to conform to the wearer’s back but stiff enough to handle heavy loads. A waist strap was added to shift the weight and was followed by a sternum strap and side compression straps. Gerry Cunningham was also hard at work in 1967 and this time he created something that put backpacks on an entirely new track. He created lightweight nylon, dry pack that quickly became popular. So popular than three years later Jansport released its own version.
These new lightweight backpacks were not only popular with outdoorsmen. Jansport put their new packs into the student sporting goods store at the University of Washington. They thought they would appeal to student hikers but they quickly realized that it wasn’t student hikers that wanted the bags. The bags became popular with all students on the campus who wanted something that would help them carry their books. Before the backpack made its way into the sporting goods store, students just carried their books in their arms or used a strap to sling them over their shoulders.
Quickly the idea of school backpacks spread like wildfire and schools became what most people associate the backpack with. Today backpacks are seen as being either for the outdoorsman or for the student. At Yukon bags, we design bags that are great for taking anywhere outdoors and for taking around the school campus. They are versatile, durable and designed to suit any need even as they change from day today. Browse through our line of backpacks to see just how they can work for you.
]]>The reason why all of these changes occur in your leather is because of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The first thing these rays will do to the leather after prolonged exposure is to change the color of the leather. This in and of it itself isn’t a problem. Your leather is going to change color as it ages and through regular use. Many people actually like it when their leather changes color and gets that aged look.
The problem is that this color change from the sun means that other changes are happening to the leather on the molecular level. Leather is a porous material; you’ll find that it absorbs moisture easily if you get caught in the rain. Unfortunately, this also means that it can lose moisture easily. The UV rays will drain the moisture from the leather leaving it very dry and brittle. The leather may also lose many of its natural oils and these cannot be replenished.
This does not mean that your leather bags should never see sunlight. You can let them out in the sun as much as you are but they never should be left out in the sun for an extended period. Also, you can help prevent sun damage to your leather goods by conditioning them regularly.
